Privacy Policy

Mathnova ("we," "us," "our") operates the SAT math diagnostic platform at mathnova.io. We're a small team building tools to help students prepare for the SAT. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

When you create an account and use our platform, we collect:

• Account information: Your email address; an optional display name (this can be any nickname or label you'd like to be called — it does not need to be your real name); and (if you sign in with a password) an encrypted password. If you sign in with Google, we receive your Google account email and basic profile information.
• Parent contact (optional): You may choose to add a parent's email address so we can send weekly progress digests and account notifications. Adding a parent email is entirely optional — accounts work fine without it, and you can add or remove it from your account settings at any time.
• Billing information: We use Stripe to process subscription payments and store a Stripe customer identifier so we can manage your subscription. We do not store card numbers or full payment details on our servers — those are held by Stripe under their own terms.
• Diagnostic data: Your answers to practice questions, confidence levels, time spent per question, and computed SAT score estimates.
• Scratch work photos: Photos you upload from your phone while working through problems.
• Usage data: Pages visited, browser type, and referral source (collected automatically to understand how students use the platform).

We do not collect your home address, phone number, or precise location.

By creating an account, you agree that we may use your information to:

• Provide and operate the diagnostic platform (scores, skill maps, results)
• Improve our product — we analyze diagnostic responses, scratch work, and usage patterns to make our questions, scoring, and recommendations better for all students
• Research and development — we use anonymized and aggregated data to study how students learn math and develop better educational tools
• Train and improve our AI and algorithms — your diagnostic responses and interactions help us build smarter question selection, scoring, and error analysis systems. This includes training machine learning models on response patterns, scratch work, and diagnostic outcomes
• Send you important account or service-related communications

We do not sell your personal information to anyone. Period.

We may share data only in these limited cases:

• Service providers: Infrastructure and hosting providers who help us run the platform (they process data on our behalf under strict agreements)
• Legal requirements: If required by law, subpoena, or legal process
• Aggregated/anonymized data: We may share anonymized, aggregated statistics (e.g., "70% of students missed questions about systems of equations") that cannot identify any individual

If you are a California resident, you have the following rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

• Right to Know: You can request the categories and specific pieces of personal information we've collected about you.
• Right to Delete: You can request deletion of your personal information. After we verify the request, we will delete or de-identify your account, parent contact, diagnostic responses, scratch work photos, and usage data within 45 days. We may retain a minimal record of the deletion request itself (and a hashed or de-identified marker of the account) so we can demonstrate compliance and ensure the deleted account is not unintentionally recreated, as permitted by Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.105(d).
• Right to Correct: You can ask us to correct inaccurate personal information we hold about you.
• Right to Non-Discrimination: We won't treat you differently for exercising your privacy rights.
• Right to Opt-Out of Sale or Sharing: We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, so this right does not apply — but we honor it in principle.

How to make a request: Email us at privacy@mathnova.io from the email address on the account, and tell us which right you want to exercise. We will verify the request by replying to that email address and may ask you to confirm a small number of account details. We will respond within 45 days as required by the CCPA, and will extend the window only if reasonably necessary (with notice to you).

If you sign in with Google, you can also disconnect Mathnova at any time from your Google account permissions page. That revokes our access to your Google profile but does not delete data we have already stored — use the deletion email above for that.

We keep your account and diagnostic data for as long as your account is active, plus a reasonable period afterward for research and platform improvement purposes. Anonymized and aggregated data may be retained indefinitely as it cannot identify you.

We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted passwords (bcrypt), secure HTTPS connections, and access controls. No system is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.

Our platform is designed for SAT test-takers, typically ages 14 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you are under 13, please do not create an account. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly.

We use your browser's local storage to keep you logged in (authentication token) and to save your diagnostic progress so you don't lose your work if you close the browser. We do not use third-party tracking cookies.

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll notify you by updating the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the platform after changes constitutes acceptance.
